A scissor lift is a mobile working platform designed to raise people along with the tools, equipment and supplies they need. These machines go by several names, including aerial work platform (AWP), elevating work platform (EWP) and mobile elevating work platform (MEWP).

The name comes from the crisscross struts under the platform, which open and close like a pair of scissors. As the struts draw together, they push the platform smoothly upward. Different models use different power sources: some are mechanical, others are hydraulic or pneumatic. Scissor lifts also come in many sizes and types, so they fit a wide range of settings.

Unlike ladders and mobile scaffolding, scissor lifts are easy to move from place to place, and they are easy to operate. This reduces worker fatigue, which makes crews more productive and helps them finish tasks faster.

Because there are so many types, scissor lifts suit many different conditions. They can also safely carry extra equipment that makes work easier and safer. For example, a turntable can be added to the platform so heavy loads can be rotated easily, and tilters let a worker adjust the angle of an item or piece of equipment. Options like these reduce how often workers have to lift and reposition heavy or awkward items.
