Boom lifts are a type of mobile elevating work platform (MEWP), also called an aerial work platform (AWP) or cherry picker. They give quick access to areas that are normally out of reach, using an extending mechanical arm. This type of machine is also known as powered access equipment.

Some aerial work platforms reach in one direction only. Scissor lifts, for example, move straight up on a concertina mechanism. Boom lifts and cherry pickers are more flexible and offer both outreach and height.

There are several types. Some reach further or higher than others, but they all work on a similar principle. The boom is attached to a platform or basket that can extend sideways or has joints that let it reach up and over obstacles. The operator moves to the right height and position using the controls on the platform, or with help from a second operator on the ground, and stays secured inside the basket or behind the safety rail.

Telescopic booms offer height and outreach, but they extend in a straight line only. Articulating booms and cherry pickers give more precise access to hard-to-reach areas, for example during aircraft maintenance and repairs. Booms and cherry pickers are the closest thing to a crane, but they move and are controlled in a completely different way.
