Scissor lifts are safe when they are used correctly. Follow these steps to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries on your site.

Before and during use

  • Inspect the lift before each use to make sure it is in proper working order.
  • Make sure every worker is trained before operating the scissor lift.
  • Move the lift only when the platform is lowered and no one is on it.
  • Do not use the scissor lift outdoors in bad weather, especially in high winds.

Fall protection

Falls are one of the main causes of accidents with large equipment. To keep workers from falling and being injured or killed:

  • The scissor lift must have working guardrails to stop operators falling from the platform.
  • Workers must stand only on the platform floor, never on the guardrails.
  • Keep the work close to the platform so no one has to lean out.

Stability

Keeping the scissor lift stable is one of the best ways to prevent tip-overs and collapses, which cause most scissor lift accidents.

  • Follow all of the manufacturer’s instructions for moving the lift safely.
  • Keep the lift away from traffic and other equipment that could hit it.
  • Set the lift on firm, stable ground, away from drop-offs, holes, bumps, slopes and debris.
  • Use the lift only in good weather, never in high winds.
  • Never exceed the weight or height limits.
