An accident involving a scissor lift can affect your company whether you own the platform or rent it.
According to IPAF accident data, there were 17 fatal accidents involving aerial work platforms (AWPs) in the first half of a single year. Three involved scissor lifts and six involved boom lifts. Causes included operators being trapped, electrocuted or falling from the platform, as well as mechanical failure or damage to the machine itself.
Every year the access industry also sees many non-fatal accidents, often with the same root cause: misuse of equipment and disregard for safety rules. That is why it is essential to follow health and safety rules and to make sure access is properly controlled before any work platform or lift is used.
Careless use does not only put operators at risk. It can also have serious legal consequences if an avoidable incident occurs. In the UK, for example, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) can investigate an accident, and your company may be prosecuted if it is found responsible.
